Frequently Asked Questions
The questions and answers in this FAQ were sourced from many places. Conventions, Discord servers, emails, etc. If we see a question getting asked more than once or twice, it, and it’s answer will often find its way here.
This FAQ will usually not address questions that are answered in the Legends of Greyhawk Guide or its FAQ. But it may add clarification on things that have been shown to be less than clear.
You will often come across the word “currently” in the answers. This is because the rules for LoG are, currently, not set in stone and projected to change.
The answer to the question we got asked most often over the recent months is:
No, Legends of Greyhawk is not Adventurers League (AL), nor is it Living Greyhawk.
Characters. Creating, Playing, etc.
To play Legends of Greyhawk you need a character, to start with, and to develop over time.
How do I make a character for Legends of Greyhawk in D&D Beyond?
The Legends of Greyhawk Guide provides the information needed to create a character, however its section on the things to select in D&D Beyond is slightly off. The correct settings to follow are:
- Initially ensure that ONLY Core Rules is selected. 2014 Core Rules, 2014 Expanded Rules, Legacy/Noncore and all Partnered content should be turned off.
- If you want to use one of the approved subclasses, feats and spells from Additional Sources like Forgotten Realms: Heroes of Faerûn, turn on Expanded Rules.
- Build away!
Can I use a custom Background for my Character?
Currently you cannot use a custom Background for your Legends of Greyhawk character. The option to create a custom background can be found in the Dungeon Masters Guide, and that book is not a rules source for Players.
How and when can i rebuild my character?
You can rebuild a Legends of Greyhawk character when it levels. The intent is to prevent bad feelings about making uninformed choices in the haste of a convention, or because a new rule option was adopted into the campaign but you missed out on it because you had already started playing.
When you you decide to rebuild a character, you may redo all the rules mechanical choices you made for your character up till now, but you cannot change anything about the adventures that were played by this character. Any items you acquired (with the exception of your starting gear), rewards you gained, Marks of Prestige, etc. They cannot be changed. For example:
When your Human Champion Fighter hits 4th level you can change it to a Dwarf Divination Wizard, but if you took that sweet +1 shield, you cannot trade it in for a more wizardly choice. And if you bought your fighter a shiny splint mail armor, that money stays spent.
Warning: It is currently not totally clear what happens if you rebuild an option that changed the price of gear. If you lose access to the proficiency that let you craft something or lose access to something like “Crafter” that gave a discount on purchases, it isn’t clear whether you have to refund the item, or pay the difference, or just get to continue on even though you paid less for a crafted item than you (technically) should.
What is totally clear however is that the rebuilding option is NOT intended to be used to make a profit for your character. So, treat this area with some caution.

What if my character dies?
If you cannot be returned to life before for the end of the adventure, you always have the option of spending 2500 gp to purchase a raise dead. Allies at the table may choose to contribute to the cost of the spell. The availability of raise dead is, unlike other spellcasting services, guaranteed within an adventure.

Can I share a character with another person?
No.
A character is linked to one, and only one, Player. You cannot share a character, and you cannot let someone else play your character.
Can I reflavor things about my character's class, species, background?
Flavor is free! As long as your reflavoring is not totally inappropriate to the setting or the campaign. And does not have or mimic rules mechanical effects, you are free to be creative. For example:
YES, to your character having multicolored lizard scales all over due to an incident at the Wizard Academy in your first year of study. But NO to those lizard scales causing your character to have resistance vs bludgeoning damage.
Or,
YES, to your character speaking Suloise/Suel and having shining red eyes, but NO to other creatures not understanding Suel and you getting to use it as a “secret” language. And also NO, to your shiny red gaze causing fire damage to creatures you stare at.
In short. As long as there is no mechanical effect of any kind. its fair game. Let your imagination go wild.
How does the Campaign track my Character's level, items, etc.?
You, the player, are expected to keep a log of your characters play and rewards (items, advancement and Marks of Prestige). While there is no prescribed format or medium for such a log, you may be asked to produce it upon request so a DM, Admin and/or Organizer can check your character is rules compliant.
The Notes section on your DnDBeyond character sheet is an excellent place to track what adventures you have played and rewards you have received.
Rewards, Treasure and Items
Playing Legends of Greyhawk adventures, there are rewards to be gained and items to be traded or bought.
How many Magic Items can I have at one time?
Legends of Greyhawk has limits on how many magic items a character may own (as documented in the Legends of Greyhawk Guide). If your character would receive an item that would put your character over the limit for your character, you must discard either the found item or one of your previously owned items. Once discarded you cannot get that particular item back, though you could find a different copy of it in a future adventure.

Do consumable magic items count towards my character's limits?
Yes.
Consumable magic items like potions or scrolls count towards the item limit.
Say your level 2 character has one Uncommon magic item and two potions of healing (Common magic items). That would mean they have room for three more Common magic items. No more.
Also note, potions and other consumables exist that are of other rarities than Common. A Potion of Pugilism, for example, would take up your one available Uncommon item slot at level 2.
Do items from Replicate Magic Item count towards the limits?
No, and Yes.
Magic items that are from replicate magic item don’t count against your magic item limit, they are a class feature.
Permanent magic items that are crafted (like potions from the alchemist) using the crafting rules do count against the item limit.
Note that while you can give items created through Replicate Magic item to other players at your table, they will still count towards the maximum allowed for the class feature, and they must return to your character at the end of an adventure.
Also, per the Legends of Greyhawk Guide, If you choose a plan that allows you to select a magic item, that item must be chosen from the Dungeon Master’s Guide.
What happens with Certificates for an item I discard?
If you have the maximum number of items and you choose to discard an item for which you have a certificate, you should turn that certificate over to your DM who should give it to your convention organizer. These will be reused to reduce printing costs for your organizer.

How does the Random Item reward work with the item limits?
Most adventures allow characters to choose a treasure bundle that is randomly determined, potentially finding rarer items. Even if you have the maximum number of magic items, you may choose to roll on the random item table. Once you find out the result you may choose to take the random item and discard another item you own, or not take the random item and keep what you already have.

What is the Order of Operation for Rewards?
There is no order to receiving Rewards. If completing an adventure that would level a character to tier two while owning the maximum number of magic items, a player may choose to gain experience first. This causes them to become 5th-level, and allows the character to then take and keep the featured or random magic item.

How does Trading Items work in Legends of Greyhawk?
Unlike other campaigns, there is no requirement to trade like for like rarity though you are limited by your maximum number of magic items based on your level (which would prevent you from getting a Very Rare magic item at tier one, for example). Trades are intended to be one magic item certificate for one magic item certificate and occur at the table. Trades must be done with a certificate for a certificate. So no one sided trading (i.e. no gifting). You cannot trade marks of prestige. Your character cannot be in a state that is not compliant with the rules and then trade. For example, you cannot have the maximum number of items, roll a random item, trade the random item to another character, and then discard the item that was traded to you.

Can we use items we find while we play the Adventure?
Magic Items you find during play can be used in the Adventure you are playing. However at the end of the session those items disappear. This goes for all items, be they magic, common, consumeable or otherwise. Most items become part of the monetary treasure option at the end. One may be the featured Magic Item, etc. But disappear they will.
Can we have non-mechanical and/or reflavored Items?
Flavor is free! Your magical items may come with some, or gain some. You may select a trinket at character creation. You may find trinkets as you play your character. Your (magical) items may have a complicated provenance. Flavor can come from everywhere, and as long as it’s not totally inappropriate and does not have or mimic rules mechanical effects, you can and should be using it.
Can I purchase gear for my character?
Currently, no time occurs between adventures (besides resting). There is no such thing as “downtime”. So, any purchases needs to be cleared within the adventure with the table DM. You cannot currently shop on your own between adventures.
Selling and buying gear is up to the discretion of the DM. If the DM believes that there was time and an appropriate location in the adventure then you could sell or buy gear from the PHB at the start, during, or end of the adventure, as the DM thinks is appropriate. Not all items listed in the PHB may be available at every location.

Can I use and buy firearms?
Pistols and muskets are found in the Player’s Handbook and so they are available in Legends of Greyhawk, even though their presence is not entirely in line with old Greyhawk lore, except for clerics of Myrlund. This choice was made to make the campaign rules easier to follow for new players (“everything in the PHB is allowed”) and not require the tracking of exceptions.

Can my character craft items, like scrolls or potions?
Currently, no time occurs between adventures (besides resting). There is no such thing as “downtime”. So, you cannot craft items between adventures. All crafting would have to happen during an adventure. So only those adventures that have sufficient time within the adventure may allow crafting, if the DM believes it appropriate.

Can I have spells cast on my character by NPC's? Are there Spell Casting Services?
Currently, no time occurs between adventures (besides resting). There is no such thing as “downtime”. So, you cannot have spells cast for you between adventures. In order to purchase spell casting services during play, an adventure should specifically list an NPC selling services, or the DM may decide such a spell is available in the adventure’s location. Please note that Greyhawk is a lower-level campaign and high-level casters are extremely rare… and most of those are not friendly.

DM Rewards
As you run Legends of Greyhawk adventures as a Dungeon Master, you gain rewards just like the players.
How do DM rewards work in Legends of Greyhawk?
Each time you run an adventure in the Legends of Greyhawk campaign, you receive mostly the same rewards as if you had played it. You may choose the gold or featured magic item, but not the random magic item. You may choose whether you receive a mark of prestige or not. You may apply the rewards to one of your Legends of Greyhawk characters, but it must be a character that has not played that adventure and henceforth can no longer play that adventure. For all intents and purposes, your character has now played that adventure when they accept the rewards. No character can ever benefit from the same adventure twice.

What if I do not wish to use the DM reward right now?
If you do not wish to apply the reward to a character right now, you may choose to bank the rewards by tracking them on a DM logsheet. These rewards can then be assigned at a later date. Because you can bank rewards, we do not allow you to choose the random magic item. Doing so would give DMs a significant advantage over other players, being able to know the random item before applying it to a character and match it up with the perfect character.

Lore, History and the Greyhawk Setting
Legends of Greyhawk takes place in, surprise, Greyhawk. A setting with a rich history. However the timeline has been reset to 576 CY.
What about old Greyhawk published works? And Living Greyhawk?
While Greyhawk products published before Fifth Edition cover a wide span of years, the campaign begins in 576 CY (see our timeline). This year is before almost all of those products. The Living Greyhawk organized play campaign that ran from 2000 to 2008, was also set in a time period that is, viewed from 576 CY, the future.
Anything in the DMG can be assumed to be true, but anything from products published in previous editions, or things that happened in the Living Greyhawk campaign, might turn out the same, similar, or end up totally different. The future described in the past may be a source of inspiration for Legends of Greyhawk, but it is not a blueprint. The campaign pivots based on critical events chosen by players at debut events. No direction is guaranteed.

What is the link between Alignment and Deities in Legends of Greyhawk?
The Greyhawk deities as presented in the DMG do not have alignments. While your character cannot be evil, nothing is stopping you from following a deity that is traditionally considered evil. Do not use your deity to be disruptive. Evil acts make a character evil, and the DM has the right to remove such characters.

Can I use the Greyhawk regional languages like Suloise or Baklunisch?
Regional Languages like Baklunish, Flan, Oeridian, Suloise and other Greyhawk languages from prior editions do not exist as rules. For now, these would be roleplaying features not actual languages to select. They can be flavor, but will have no mechanical effects.
Where do all the new player options fit in the Greyhawk lore?
If it’s a valid player option it exists on Oerth and you aren’t shoehorned into a particular narrative.
